The rule

Last official count only: the newest figure published by a government, the UN or another official body, with its own date. Unconfirmed reports and tracker-site totals are not shown.

A figure is shown as the last official count: the newest one published by a government, the UN, an international agency or a named primary source, with the date that source gave it. Dates differ from row to row, so rows should not be added together. Where only press coverage of an official or market figure could be read, the row says so. Some official sites refuse automated reading, and those are never worked around: the figure is then taken from what the body itself published elsewhere, and the row says how it was read.

How the numbers are made

• Estimated cost counter. The latest official anchor ($43.6 billion, Pentagon, Sep 3) plus the CBO's monthly rate ($2 to $3 billion a month). It is modelled, not observed. After 60 days without a newer official figure, the page shows a warning.
• Ship attacks. Counts UKMTO (UK Maritime Trade Operations) warnings classed "Attack" whose text describes a strike. UKMTO does not name ships, so these are reports, not unique vessels. Refreshed three times a day from UKMTO's public page, confirmed by a person before it goes on air.
• Ships sunk. IMO data as reported by CNN and Reuters: three since Feb 28. The cause of the most recent sinking is disputed and the page says so.
• Hormuz traffic. Vessel detections per day (IMF PortWatch, AIS-derived). This counts ships, not cargo: oil flow is down far less (IEA).
• US gas prices by state. AAA's published state averages, fetched automatically.
• Casualties. Official counts only, each dated. US forces come from the Pentagon's own casualty site.

What is weak

• Several governments have not updated casualty counts since spring. Rows say when.
• Iran's civilian death toll is disputed: the UN reports the Iranian health ministry's count; independent monitors count fewer civilians. Both are shown.
• Bahrain, Qatar and Oman rows come from press reports of official statements, and are tagged.
• No official figure for bombs dropped exists; targets struck is a different measure.
• Insurance war-risk premiums: the newest figure from a named broker is from July 22.
• Some official sites (UN OCHA, ReliefWeb, the IEA, the US State Department travel pages) block automated reading. The page uses what they published elsewhere, or other official bodies (for example the UK Foreign Office for travel advice).
• The IMF's country forecasts are as reported by Al Jazeera; the global headline figures match the IMF's own briefing text.
